Update regarding over-the-counter expenses

Effective January 1, 2011, Flexible Spending Account money may not be used to purchase over-the-counter drugs and medicines such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen or cough syrup unless you have a note of medical necessity (NMN) or a prescription from your doctor. If you have an NMN or a prescription for an over-the-counter drug or medicine, you must pay at the point of service and submit a manual claim for reimbursement. A copy of your prescription or NMN for over-the-counter medications will be kept on file at Chard Snyder and must be updated annually.

You may continue to use your Flexible Spending Account to purchase eligible over-the-counter items that are not considered a drug or a medicine such as bandages, wound care, contact lens solution, etc.

Please note that this new regulation is currently being studied and may undergo further revision or clarification. A current list of eligible items is available here.

Thank you,

Chard Snyder
